Common questions

Where are my smaller copies?

In a new folder beside the one you chose, with "(Shrinkwise)" added to the name, for example Site photos (Shrinkwise). Your original folder is never changed. Click "Open the smaller copies" on the results screen to go straight there.

Some iPhone photos (HEIC) were not converted

Windows needs two free add-ons from Microsoft to read HEIC photos. Shrinkwise shows a yellow notice with links when this applies:

Install HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
Install HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer (the free edition).
Click Check again in Shrinkwise, then run the folder again. Files already done are skipped.

A program will not open the WebP photos

SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Windows Photos and every current browser show WebP. Some older desktop software does not. Keep the originals for those uses, or open the WebP in Windows Photos and use "Save as" to make a JPG.

Some files show "copied as-is"

That is deliberate. If a photo or video is already efficient, a converted copy would not be smaller, so Shrinkwise copies the original instead. You never end up with a bigger file.

Videos are slow to convert

Video takes much longer than photos, especially 4K. Shrinkwise uses your PC's graphics hardware where it can. You can keep working while it runs, and Stop is always safe: finished files are kept and the next run carries on where it left off. The Maximum saving preset (720p) is the quickest.

Is the date and location kept?

Yes. Date taken, location and camera details are copied to the smaller photos and videos, and photos are turned the right way up. Tick "Remove location (GPS) from the copies" if you do not want locations shared.

How is the savings figure worked out?

It is the space saved multiplied by your cloud storage price, which you can set on the main screen. The lifetime total adds up every month the smaller files save you storage. It is an estimate: your provider's actual bill depends on your plan.

"Shrink with Shrinkwise" is missing from the right-click menu

On Windows 11 it appears on the main right-click menu for folders. If you do not see it, restart File Explorer (or sign out and back in) after installing. On Windows 10 it is in the standard menu.

How do I uninstall?

Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Shrinkwise > Uninstall. Your photos, videos and any smaller copies are not touched.
